Located one and a half hours away from Richland County via I-26, the Port of Charleston is the largest container port on the U.S. Southeast and Gulf coasts. It is the 8th largest in the United States for cargo value and one of only a handful of ports to have received the Presidential "E" and "E-Star" awards for excellence in exporting. Recently, the S.C. Ports Authority and the Army Corps of Engineers have finalized a plan to deepen the Charleston harbor. According to the plan, construction would be completed by 2022. The Port of Charleston is also currently constructing a new container terminal which will boost capacity in the port by 50%. The opening date for the first phase of this terminal is planned for 2019.
