South Carolina ranked No. 5 among the top destination states and Columbia was No. 30 among U.S. cities in 2012, according to U-Haul International’s National Migration Trend Report.

The data for 2012 indicates that for states with more than 20,000 families moving, South Carolina had 1.58% more families moving into the state than out.

Neighboring North Carolina ranked No. 4, with 2.39% more families moving into the state than out, according to U-Haul.

Washington had the highest percentage of growth of the 50 states, with 4.27% more families moving into the state than out.

Meanwhile, Columbia was the only South Carolina city ranked in U-Haul’s top 50 metro area destinations. Columbia ranked between Baltimore, at No. 29, and Oklahoma City, No. 31.

The report was based on nationwide trends in states with more than 20,000 families moving in or out of the area. Growth was determined by calculating the percentage of inbound moves versus outbound moves for each state, U-Haul said.

The report was compiled from more than 1.6 million U-Haul one-way truck transactions in 2012.
