South Carolina ranked No. 7 in Site Selection magazine’s latest compilation of states with the best business climates.

The magazine based 50% of its ranking on a survey of corporate site selectors and the other 50% on a set of criteria selected by editors. Those criteria include the state’s competitiveness rank listed in the May issue, qualified projects announced so far this year, state tax burdens, and the number of projects per capita.

The Palmetto State finished No. 2 in the survey of corporate site selectors, behind top-ranked Texas and ahead of No. 3 North Carolina.

South Carolina also ranked No. 10 for competitiveness.

In other categories, South Carolina ranked No. 17 in both 2012 new-plant rank and new-plant rank per capita; No. 18 for 2013 new-plant rank; No. 14 for 2013 new-plant rank per capita; No. 32 for mature-firm tax burden; No. 34 for new-firm tax burden.

Georgia received the No. 1 ranking for top business climates, followed by North Carolina and Texas.
