COLUMBIA, S.C. - Richland County is proud to partner with the South Carolina Department of Commerce to support Scout Motors’ project by kicking off an ambitious conservation project along the Congaree River. This initiative will preserve nearly 5,000 acres of natural land in the COWASEE Basin in addition to a streams preservation project underway at the Sumter National Forest. This landmark effort is made possible thanks to collaboration by multiple key partners: the SC Congaree Land Trust, S.C. Commerce, the Open Space Institute, Water & Land Solutions, the South Carolina Forestry Commission, South Carolina Department of Transportation, the U.S. Forestry Service, and consultants with Environmental Planning and Restoration, LLC.
“Project collaborations like this are a win for Richland County and our state,” said Richland County Council Chairwoman Jesica Mackey. “Not only does it expand vital conservation efforts, but it also opens up previously private land for public use. As the demand for outdoor recreation grows, this property will serve an important need. We commend Scout Motors for their long-term sustainable investment in South Carolina and their commitment to enhancing our community’s quality of life.”
The project focuses on the Millaree site, a rural property located just south of Columbia. The area was historically used for agriculture, timber management, and private hunting. It will now undergo an extensive restoration. This conservation initiative will enhance local hydrology, replace non-native pine trees with native hardwoods, restore wetlands, and create opportunities for public outdoor recreation.
This Richland County and Scout Motors project will not only see thousands of acres of floodplain in the Congaree State Forest restored, it will also aid in the protection of Shelton Island in the Broad River and restore more than 18 miles of streams. This surpasses all federal credit requirements and creates public land for long-term access.
Additionally, the Chester Stream Mitigation project taking place near the Sumter National Forest will restore and stabilize 103,000 linear feet of streams over the next 10 years, improving habitat, water quality, and reducing downstream sedimentation.
"Scout Motors is committed to leading with respect for people, communities and the land, including by promoting sustainable practices and preserving our local environment,” said Jessica Siron, Senior Director of Environment, Health & Safety at Scout Motors. “We are encouraged to see this important project move forward and appreciate the support of our partners, who have worked persistently to ensure these lands remain a treasured natural resource for generations."
“In South Carolina, people can work where they love thanks to the state’s natural beauty and long-standing commitment to balance transformative economic growth and the protection of natural resources,” said Secretary of Commerce Harry Lightsey. “Collaboration on this project between Richland County, Scout Motors and S.C. Commerce reinforces that commitment.”
